The Forestry Journal
March 25th, 2012. This has been a lot more difficult than I expected to keep this journal updated. Since I last checked in, I've prepared several forest management plans to give properties tax breaks via the Commercial Forest Act, and also the Qualified Forest Property Tax Exemption. This winter I managed a thinning on a 40 acre parcel near Lake Linden, and it turned out absolutely fantastic. I regret that I didn't take any videos along the way, as it turned out to be one of the nicest looking jobs yet. I am currently working on setting up a 240 acre harvest in Torch Lake Township, so I hope to bring some footage of the action as that sale unfolds. Until next time!
August 22nd, 2011. Time to do a better job of keeping this blog updated. Since I was last here, I managed a 160 acre timber harvest that turned out fantastic. The property looked great after the harvest, and we were even able to sell the property to new buyers afterwards with no trouble. Now I just completed a 50+ acre harvest along US-41 between Houghton and Baraga. Here is a video clip of riding along in the impressive Ponsse Harvesters used by the logging company. Now that we're finished with that project, I'm starting a 40 acre sale near Lake Linden, as well as a 400 acre sale near Gay. I will try to bring you more video clips along with these upcoming projects. My forestry business has been busy, which is great. I really enjoy this part of my job.
May 13th, 2010. We've been lucky to have such an early spring. The clearing portion of the job is done, and we have started on the thinning process, which is how the majority of the property will be managed. Things are going very well, there is some debris on the ground, but this forest had so much dead and drying trees already, that it is unavoidable. The debris left behind is actually very beneficial and important to the forest. The debris will degrade back into the soil, which is crucial to the nutrient cycle, and will make the soil very productive. Here is short video clip of the most recent update. Enjoy the spring weather!
March 7th, 2010. The weather has been extremely warm, and the county has put road restrictions on until spring. This means that we will not be able to truck the wood from the job to the mill. The harvesting will still be able to continue, they'll just have to keep decking the wood up until the restrictions come off, and then start delivering it to the mill again. We are almost finished with the clearing portion of the harvest. The landowner wants to clear about 10 acres, so they can build some structures around the property. After the clearing portion is done, we'll begin the thinning on the rest of the property. Here is another video update from my last visit.
February 25th, 2010. The actual harvesting has began at the Rabbit Bay job. The weather finally got nice and cold, which helped freeze the roads in. Today I went out there to meet with the loggers again, and go over some of the final details. Everything is looking very good. Check out today's video to see the latest progress.
February 4th, 2010. I'm currently working on a timber harvest near Rabbit Bay. All of the contracts are finally signed, and today I went out to mark the property lines, and lay out some other cutting boundaries. I'm looking forward to sharing this process with you from start to finish. Forest management is a beautiful thing when done properly. Please check out today's video, and keep watching for more to come!
